Can you guess the word before time runs out? In against the clock mode you have exactly 5 minutes to find the solution. If the countdown reaches zero, the game is lost automatically.
This mode tests your ability to think under pressure. Vocabulary and strategy aren't enough: you also need to be fast. At the end of each game you can start over immediately with a new word.
When the clock is ticking, the brain works differently. You don't have time to weigh every option calmly: you rely on intuition, on the automatic movement of your fingers on the keyboard, on the patterns you've internalized by playing. The words you know best come up first; the rarer ones stay in the background.
That's the beauty of timed mode: it reveals how well you really know Italian words. Recognizing a word when you read it is one thing; recalling it in a few seconds while the countdown ticks down is a whole other challenge. With practice, you'll notice words come to mind faster and faster.
Against the clock mode is a great exercise to do before the daily challenge. Two or three quick games are enough to switch on the part of the brain that reasons about letters, positions and combinations. When you then take on the word of the day, you'll notice you're already in shape: the letters will come to mind more easily and your deductions will be faster.
Try a warm-up session with a goal: for example, solve at least two words out of three within the time limit. Or focus on your first try — always pick the same opening word so you don't waste precious seconds deciding how to begin.
The main enemy isn't the clock, it's rushing. Five minutes are more than enough for six tries — as long as you don't panic. After each try, take two or three seconds to read the colors carefully. A misread halfway through the game can cost you precious tries and waste time on impossible words.
A handy trick: don't look at the clock after every try. Focus on the grid and the colors. The time you save by reasoning well is far more than what you gain by typing fast. Training in unlimited mode without rushing will help you build the confidence you need to play against the clock stress-free.
