Accents Mode — Words with à, è, ì, ò, ù

In accents mode, every word of the day contains at least one accented vowel (à, è, ì, ò, ù). It's the perfect challenge for anyone who wants to prove they've mastered Italian spelling and know exactly where the accent falls, no hesitation.

As in the daily mode, a new word is published every day at 6:00 (Rome time). The difference is that here every solution includes at least one written accent, which adds an extra layer of difficulty.

Accents in Italian

In Italian, the written accent is required on multisyllabic words stressed on the last syllable (città, perché, virtù) and on certain single-syllable words that need to be told apart from unaccented homographs: /si, è/e, /la, /li, /ne, /da.

The grave accent (à, è, ì, ò, ù) is the most common; the acute accent is used almost only on the closed "e", in words like perché, poiché, affinché — while caffè takes the grave accent because it has an open "e".

Tips for accents mode

Remember to turn on "Accented letters" in the settings: that way you can type à, è, ì, ò, ù straight from the on-screen keyboard. Think about the typical endings of 5-letter words stressed on the last syllable: in nouns (CITTÀ, BONTÀ, UNITÀ), in accented nouns (CAFFÈ), in other nouns (VIRTÙ, TRIBÙ, BAMBÙ).
